Passages

Durational Performance and Installation (9 hours)

Passages is a solo exhibition for my MFA first-year review at UC San Diego. I utilize thread, sounds of the sewing machine, and stitching to recall my grandmother’s past as a seamstress.

Yamayaki

foraged grass, branch, and thread

39 in H x 35 in W x 23 in D

Installation at the Akiyoshidai International Art Village, Japan

This sculpture is inspired by the cycles of grass in Akiysohidai’s Karst Plateau. The green grass in the summer turns golden in the fall, and finally black in the winter. During February, there is a ritual of burning dead grass, “Yamayaki,” to allow new growth to emerge.

98 in H x 25 in W x 3 in D

Installation at the Akiyoshidai International Art Village, Japan

Komorebi translates to “sunlight filtering through the trees.” This ephemeral weaving consists of foraged materials, which were collected during daily walks around the Akiyoshidai Quasi-National Park.

This performance at the Salton Sea is in response to current water politics. The skin is made out of latex casts from man holes and cracks on the ground in San Diego. The Colorado River no longer replenishes the Salton Sea, but is distributed to San Diego County and Coachella Valley. The result is lower water levels, and a rise of toxic dust in nearby communities.
